Naloxone Training

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone is an easy to administer medication which temporarily reverses an opioid overdose by blocking the associated receptors in the brain.

Do Extern provide training?

Yes, in Northern Ireland we give out naloxone and train people to administer it after they themselves have received relevant training.

What type of training is available?

  1. Training for Trainers (full-day)
This is specifically for staff working in Trusts and other organisations who could legally supply naloxone to others after attending the course. For example, a social worker in a Community Addiction Team or a Substance Misuse Liaison Nurse working in a hospital. Staff working in EDs, community pharmacists and those working in PHA funded Low Threshold Services are also encouraged to attend this course. After completion you will be able to train other and supply them with naloxone. (If you have previously been trained as a trainer but not in the last 2 years, then this is also the course for you.)
  2. Training for Trainers (half-day)
This ‘refresher’ course is for the same people as above to update their skills. Those who have completed the initial full-day training should then attend this refresher course in Training for Trainers every 2 years.
  3. Training on Naloxone Administration (full-day)
Typically staff working with people at high-risk of opioid overdose attend this course as it will enable to intervene effectively with an overdosed casualty. Homelessness services staff are an example of such staff. However it may also be relevant to staff in NI Forensic Service, wider addiction services (than described above), Floating Support services and many more. (If you have previously completed this course but not in the last 2 years, this is the course for you.
  4. Training on Naloxone Administration (half-day)
This is a ‘refresher’ course to update those who have completed the full-day Naloxone Administration course within 2 years. It will update you on the most up-to-date evidence-base and skills in managing an opioid overdose.
