Everyone can make a positive contribution to society
Gavin Adams joined Extern on 24 April 2014 as Director of Business Development. Gavin was formerly Senior Manager for Business Development with the Royal National Institute of Blind People, where he led on fundraising, finance, public affairs, retail and communications/marketing functions across Northern Ireland.
On the current hotly debated issue of voluntary sector pay Derek McCabe, Chair of Extern comments:
"Extern's guiding principle is based on the Institute of Directors' guidance and the UK Corporate Governance Code that 'levels of remuneration should be sufficient to attract, retain and motivate directors of the quality required to run the company successfully, but a company should avoid paying more than is necessary for this purpose'. CEO pay is set by Extern's trustees in line with best practice through a remuneration committee. "
Charlie Mack, CEO of Extern comments:
"Extern has contributed to the Association of Chief Executives of the Voluntary Sector's collection of evidence for the Public Administration Select Committee which is meeting to discuss the matter, on Tuesday 17 December 2013. We agree with the findings of ACEVO’s 2013 Pay Survey which shows sector pay has been restrained. Extern is currently in the process of implementing a performance related pay scheme as we believe good pay represents value for money for a charity’s beneficiaries, funders and staff."
Despite the challenges that charities are facing, they remain committed to providing excellent services and supporting their staff. The Childcare Works Awards, sponsored by Employers for Childcare and Business in the Community, recognise pioneering family-friendly employment practice
across all businesses in Northern Ireland. The awards were held in Belfast in September 2013 and this year the award for Social Enterprise and Charity of the Year 2013 was won by Extern. Extern provides services which support families, address homelessness, build skills and provide safer communities throughout the island of Ireland.
People from across the voluntary sector dug deep to support the NI Hospice in its latest fund raising campaign during a specialist training held at Extern on 23rd September 2013. They raised a staggering £250 from a coffee morning event hosted by Extern’s Practice Development Team. The money will go towards providing specialist hospice care for those with life-limiting illnesses. Extern provides a wide range of social care skills development – including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention - to people working in community and voluntary sector organisations across Northern Ireland.
Charlie Mack (New CEO of Extern) and Kevin McCabe (Assistant Secretary NIPSA) have delivered agreement on a framework for consultation.
Aaron Durnion, volunteer intern at Extern, is preparing to return to New York in September. It is anticipated that Aaron will persue a career in business and marketing in New York City.
Charlie Mack has recently been appointed as Extern’s new Chief Executive. He said, “I am excited to lead Extern into the next crucial phase of its development.Extern is an all-Ireland charity whose business is to help people improve their lives and to make communities safer.Our vision is that, with timely intervention, everyone is able to make a positive contribution to society.”
Charlie Mack, Chief Executive of Extern, yesterday presented the Extern Annual Award for the best BSc Hons Social Policy Placement to student Nathan Holmes.
