Women's Housing Support Project

Our Southern Women's Homeless Support Service provides intensive, one-to-one support from a dedicated female keyworker to women 18+ across the Southern Housing Area who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and experiencing co-occurring mental health or substance use issues, helping them access and sustain safe, settled accommodation

Extern's Southern Women's Homeless Support Service provides intensive, one-to-one support to women aged 18+ who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and experiencing co-occurring mental health or substance/alcohol use issues. A dedicated female keyworker delivers person-centred support to help reduce barriers to access and enable women to sustain safe, settled accommodation.

What This Service Aims to Do

  • Provide intensive, holistic support to women at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness alongside co-occurring mental ill health and substance or alcohol use, helping them access and sustain accommodation.
  • Deliver person-centred support through a dedicated female keyworker to help women sustain tenancies.
  • Support women across the entirety of their homelessness journey - from crisis through to the transition into settled accommodation.

Who Can Access This Service

This service supports:

  • Women aged 18 and over
  • Residing in the Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Newry, Mourne & Down, or Mid Ulster housing areas
  • Who are homeless or at risk of homelessness
  • Experiencing problematic alcohol or substance use, and/or poor mental health

Referral pathway: This is an open-access service. Referrals are welcome from individuals, as well as community, voluntary, and statutory organisations.

Support for women 18+ facing homelessness across Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Newry, Mourne & Down and Mid Ulster.

What Support Is Offered

  • Practical support including homeless applications, benefit entitlement assessments, access to emergency foodbank provision, and GP registration support
  • Close engagement with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) and other service providers for robust wraparound support
  • Harm reduction support
  • Safety planning
  • Collaborative, multi-agency working
  • Tenancy sustainment and resettlement support

This service operates across the Southern Housing Area, covering:

  • Armagh
  • Banbridge
  • Craigavon
  • Newry, Mourne & Down
  • Mid Ulster

(Excludes Ards & North Down, Fermanagh, and Omagh.)

Funding

This project is funded by the NIHE Homeless Prevention Fund.
