Role: Youth Justice Worker

About the role

Make a real difference in the lives of young people and help shape safer, stronger communities. As a Youth Justice Worker within the Youth Diversion Project (YDP), you will play a vital role in supporting young people aged 8–18 who are at risk of anti-social or criminal behaviour. Working with those facing complex challenges, you will deliver tailored interventions, creative programmes, and positive activities that encourage personal growth, resilience, and stronger connections with their communities.

This dynamic, community-based role involves collaborating with multi-agency partners, families, and local organisations to design meaningful opportunities that promote pro-social behaviour, civic responsibility, and improved long-term life prospects. Through innovative programmes and supportive guidance, you will empower young people to recognise their potential and move toward brighter, more positive futures.

Help change the direction of a young person’s life. As a Janus Worker, you will support young people with complex needs who are at high risk of entering care or returning from residential care or custody. Through tailored, creative interventions and strong community partnerships, you will help build resilience, encourage positive behaviour, and strengthen connections with family and community.

You’ll also collaborate on regional campaigns like Alcohol Awareness Week and Dry January, helping shape the conversation around substance use in Northern Ireland.

About the role

Are you passionate about supporting young people to thrive, even during challenging times? Join Extern’s Short Stay Break Service as a Key Worker, where you’ll play a vital role in helping young people (aged 8–17) reset, reconnect, and build brighter futures.

In this rewarding role, you’ll create a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where young people can take a positive break from difficult situations. Through fun, meaningful activities - social, educational, cultural, and recreational - you’ll help them explore healthy choices, build confidence, and develop greater independence.

Working as part of a dedicated team, you’ll support young people during short stays of up to four days, giving families space to navigate challenges while helping prevent crises from escalating. Your work will support young people to return home with renewed confidence, stronger coping skills, and a more positive outlook.
