About the role

Join Extern as a Bank Worker and make a real difference in the lives of young people aged 8–17. You’ll support them to build wellbeing, independence, and positive life skills through activities at home, in school, and in the community, including after-school sessions, day trips, and residential experiences.

You may also help deliver our Short Stay Break Service, providing short-term breaks that offer a supportive, safe, and engaging alternative to placement breakdown.

Role: Key Worker

About the role

As a Key Worker, you will support young people aged 8–17 and their families by promoting wellbeing, independence, and positive life choices within their community.

Working within our Short Stay Break Service, you will provide a structured, safe, and engaging environment for young people during four-day, four-night breaks at an Extern youth facility. Through a mix of social, educational, cultural, and recreational activities, you will help young people explore lifestyle issues and build resilience, while social workers engage with carers to prevent placement breakdown.

Your work ensures that children and young people can return to their living arrangements successfully, with the support they need, and may go on to access further services within Extern’s continuum of care.

Role: Bank Worker

As a Bank Worker, you will provide essential support to our hostels, helping service users with offending backgrounds improve their wellbeing, independence, and life choices. You may also have direct contact with their families and friends, creating a positive impact that extends beyond the individual. This role requires resilience, flexibility, and an open mind, as you will be working with people with complex needs and supporting them through meaningful change.

About the role

Extern's MUST Hostel provides temporary accommodation for women and men experiencing homelessness, many with complex needs including mental health issues, substance use, or involvement with the criminal justice system.

As a Key Worker, you will support vulnerable service users assessed as medium to high risk of reoffending. You’ll work closely with individuals to manage risks, address mental and physical health challenges, addiction, and learning disabilities, and guide them towards successful resettlement into independent living. The role involves practical support, advocacy, and partnership working with statutory and voluntary agencies.

This is a challenging but highly rewarding role, offering the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives.
