For almost 30 years, Extern’s Homeless Support Team (HST) - in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust - has helped individuals and families find stability, secure housing, and rebuild their lives.

How We Help 

We offer compassionate, professional support tailored to your unique situation. Our services include: 

  • Housing & Tenancy Support: Assistance with housing applications, appeals, landlord liaison, and tenancy sustainment. 
  • Welfare & Financial Advice: Help navigating benefits, welfare applications, and managing household stability. 
  • Practical & Emotional Guidance: Housing crisis intervention, routine wellbeing checks, and support building independent living skills. 
  • Appointment & Advocacy Support: Accompaniment to healthcare, social services, and Housing Executive appointments.
Accessing Our Support 

We bring support directly to you - combining a central advice hub with extensive outreach across Belfast, North Down & Ards, Mid-Ulster, and Enniskillen. 

In the past year, our Homeless Support Team has made an incredible impact, offering crucial support to 737 individuals experiencing homelessness.

Homeless Advice Centre (King Street, Belfast) 

Our King Street hub offers a safe, professional space to meet our team. Services available by appointment include: 

  • One-to-one housing and homeless advice 
  • Benefits assessments and application support 
  • Tailored support planning and case management
Community Outreach & Home Visiting 

If you cannot come to us, we come to you. Our teams provide direct outreach across local communities, including: 

  • Family homes and private tenancies 
  • Hostels and temporary accommodation 
  • Supported housing projects 
  • Health & Social Care settings and NI Housing Executive offices 

Note on Regional Projects: Referrals for our outreach initiatives in North Down & Ards, Mid-Ulster, and Enniskillen are managed through a closed referral pathway via the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Extern Homes

Extern Homes is part of Extern’s homelessness service offer and provides a housing led approach for Extern service users in homelessness. We identify tenants from our homelessness services to ensure the most appropriate service users are provided with an opportunity to build a sound tenancy history with the most relevant and appropriate support in place.

Central to our project is the indispensable support provided to tenants in maintaining their tenancy, a crucial step towards breaking the cycle of homelessness.

Our goal is to empower each tenant by facilitating access to essential services, enabling them to achieve positive outcomes and foster long-term stability.

As tenants progress and develop a stable history of successful tenancy, Extern Homes extends its support to facilitate their transition towards accessing more enduring housing solutions.
