Building Bridges to Community, Connection and Belonging
When EOSS, Extern’s disability service, moved into our new office at Mishnoc, staff had an idea: to decorate the walls with photographs of the bridges connecting Limerick, Clare and Tipperary. It was a simple way to reflect the places we serve, and a reminder that while we live in different towns and villages, we’re all part of a wider community.
Time moved on, and the idea stayed just that. Then, on a forest walk near Cloughjordan, the conversation turned to Liam. Could he take the idea and bring it to life?
Liam embraced the challenge. He designed a logo and gave the project a name and a motto. What began as a thought about geography became a symbol of why we do this work.
Liam gave shape to the vision. It’s now up to us to keep that bridge open, so everyone has the chance to be part of their community, in their own way.
For EOSS, the bridge stands for our commitment to supporting people to be active and valued members of their communities. That means opening doors beyond our office, so people can discover their interests, grow in confidence and build relationships. A visit to a local café, joining a community group, or becoming a familiar face in town can make a real difference. Each one is another step towards independence and inclusion.
Our role is to listen to what people want, and to work with families, local organisations, businesses and clubs to make those connections possible. But a bridge must be accessible from both sides. Real inclusion also needs communities that are open and welcoming, and that value every individual.
Every journey is different too. We walk alongside each person, respecting their pace, their preferences and their right to choose their own path.
