Athy YDP Young Person Honoured at Kildare Garda Awards
A young person supported by Athy Youth Diversion Project (YDP) has been recognised at the Kildare Garda Awards 2026, held in Newbridge Town Hall on 8 May. The annual awards celebrate young people across Kildare who are making a positive difference in their communities.
The Youth Diversion Project (YDP) is a community-based programme that works with young people aged 12–17 who are at risk of, or already involved in, anti-social or offending behaviour. The aim is to support young people to make positive choices, build confidence, and move towards brighter futures through early intervention, relationship-based support, and community connection.
Nominated by his youth justice worker, Lindsay Hoey, the young person received the award in recognition of his resilience, personal growth, and commitment to volunteering.
Following a diagnosis of Long QT Syndrome, a serious heart condition, his daily life changed significantly. He had to step back from the sports he loved and adjust to new physical limitations, which impacted his confidence and routine.
Despite this, he has shown determination and strength in adapting to his condition and rebuilding his confidence over time.
Through the Gaisce Award, he has continued to challenge himself - learning Spanish, engaging in volunteering, and working carefully towards returning to football in a safe and balanced way.
He also makes a meaningful contribution to his community, supporting his elderly uncle with weekly shopping and creating handmade decorations for local events such as Christmas celebrations, Darkness Into Light, and Tidy Towns initiatives.
His story is a powerful example of resilience, personal development, and the positive impact young people can have within their communities. The award reflects not only his achievements, but also his quiet determination and commitment to helping others.
