How Early Intervention Helped Three Young People Graduate in Kildare

Three young people supported by Extern's Athy Youth Development Project (YDP) have successfully achieved their iScoil QQI Level 3 qualification - a significant educational milestone and a moment of immense pride for the project, their families, and everyone who supported them along the way.

What is a Youth Diversion Project?

Extern's Youth Diversion Projects (YDPs) provide early intervention and support to young people in Ireland who are at risk of, or have already had contact with, the justice system. Through mentoring, education support, and targeted youth work, YDP staff help young people build confidence, develop new skills, and move toward more positive futures. The Athy YDP is based in County Kildare and works with some of the most vulnerable young people in the area.

A Year of Hard Work Pays Off

In September, three young people engaged with the Athy YDP enrolled with iScoil - a flexible online school designed to support young people who are outside of mainstream education. Over the months that followed, they committed to their studies, navigated challenges, and kept going — and on Thursday 11th June, they graduated with their QQI Level 3 qualification.

For young people facing significant barriers to education, a QQI Level 3 represents far more than a certificate. It is evidence of resilience, determination, and what becomes possible when the right early intervention and support is in place.

A Celebration to Remember

The graduation brought together family members and project staff for a full house celebration in Athy - a powerful reminder of the difference that community, consistency, and compassionate youth work can make.

Congratulations to all three graduates. Extern is incredibly proud of everything you have achieved, and we wish you every success as you continue your educational journey.

A sincere thank you also to the Extern youth justice team and School Completion Project workers whose dedication throughout the year made this graduation possible.
