Strengthening Trauma-Informed Practice Through Partnership with UISCE
Staff from Extern came together at our Ballyboggan office in Dublin for an insightful and impactful workshop delivered by UISCE, Ireland’s national advocacy service supporting people who use drugs.
UISCE (Union for Improved Services, Communication and Education) works to uphold the human rights of people who use drugs, empowering individuals to have their voices heard and promoting dignity, equality, and respect. Their work aligns closely with Extern’s trauma-informed approach, which recognises the importance of understanding lived experience and creating supportive, non-judgemental environments.
The workshop was led by Andy O'Hara, who shared insights into UISCE’s frontline advocacy work across Dublin and their efforts to influence positive social change. He was joined by peer advocate AnnMarie, who spoke openly about her lived experience and the barriers she faced when accessing services. AnnMarie’s story highlighted the power of compassionate, person-centred support and the transformative impact of advocacy.
The session brought together staff from our Intensive Home Support Services, Youth Support Janus, and Youth Diversion Project teams. It created space for meaningful discussion on addiction, advocacy, and how we can continue to strengthen our trauma-informed practice when supporting individuals and families.
At Extern, we are committed to continuous learning and collaboration with partners across the sector. Workshops like this help ensure our staff are equipped to provide compassionate, respectful, and effective support, while strengthening the partnerships that are essential to improving outcomes for the people and communities we serve.
