Extern marks International Overdose Awareness Day

Extern will be one of a number of organisations coming together at City Hall this Friday (29th August) to mark International Overdose Awareness Day, remembering those who lost their lives to overdose and confront the stigma that surrounds drug related deaths.. The awareness day takes place on 31 August, serving as a reminder of the urgent need for compassion, understanding, and action in responding to the ongoing challenges of substance use.

Figures released by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) show that 169 drug-related deaths were registered in 2023 and while this represents a decrease in comparison to previous years, it remains a stark reminder of the devastating impact that substance-related deaths continue to have across our communities.

Mal Byrne, Director of Mental Health and Addictions Services at Extern, said, "International Overdose Awareness Day is a moment not only to remember lives lost, but to commit to building safer, more supportive communities for those at risk today. It is about acknowledging the lives lost too soon and standing alongside the families and communities who carry that loss every day. It is also an opportunity to challenge the stigma which too often surrounds overdose. By speaking openly and compassionately, we can foster understanding, offer support, and ensure that no one feels they have to face this journey alone."

Extern continues to work across communities to provide vital support for individuals and families affected by substance use, offering practical help, harm reduction, and a safe space for those at risk.

To mark the day, Extern will be attending an International Overdose Awareness Day Event hosted at Belfast City Hall on 29th August. As part of the event, Extern will be hosting a Remembrance Message Board, providing a space for people to leave messages in memory of loved ones who have lost their lives through drug addiction. An Information Stall will also showcase Extern’s harm reduction and recovery services, highlighting the support available to individuals, families, and communities affected by substance use.

Mal continued, “We encourage everyone to join us on 29 August at Belfast City Hall, whether that be to remember, reflect, or learn more about the help that’s out there for individuals, families, and communities affected by overdose.”
