HARM REDUCTION: HAVE FUN. STAY SAFE.

1. Preparation is Key
  • Eating is not cheating: Don’t drink on an empty stomach.
  • Keep hydrated: This helps with the hangover.
2. Before Taking Drugs
  • Consider your environment: How might you feel when intoxicated here?
  • Start low, go slow.
  • Test your dose: You have no idea of the strength of drugs, test dose before taking anymore.
  • Be patient: Certain drugs like MDMA can take up to 60 mins to kick in – don’t rush as this can increase the dangers.
  • Don't copy someone else: All tolerance levels are different.
3. Know the Risks
  • Getting caught in the moment: Drinks flowing, sun shining and atmosphere electric – you can easily get caught up and take something and you don’t know what it is. This carries risks.
  • Prescription interactions: Some substances interact negatively with the likes of anti-depressants, ADHD medication or other prescription drugs – if you have underlying health concerns your risk may be higher.
4. Drink Safety
  • Don’t leave drinks unattended or take drinks from strangers – spiking can happen in these busy environments.
  • Mixing drugs increases your chances of heart damage, overdose and can interfere with prescribed medication.
  • Avoid putting drugs into drinks: This increases risk of overdose as the amounts cannot be controlled this way.
5. Take a Breather
  • Keep cool and hydrated.

  • If you are feeling overwhelmed or overheating, find a space away from the crowd and relax, cool down and get some water.
  • Make sure you tell your friends where you are.
  • Anxiety and panic attacks can happen but if symptoms are severe or last a long time and include chest pain, breathing issues or collapse – treat as a medical emergency.

You’ve got your tickets, your outfit and travel plans to get there, now let’s make sure you have fun and have a safe night out.

6. Keep Hydrated
  • Sip 1 pint of water per hour – as drinking too much can be dangerous.
7. Mind Your Mate
  • Avoid using drugs alone.
  • Have an emergency contact saved on your phone (ICE) so if you get left alone someone can contact your emergency contact.
  • Seek help from Stewards or Medics if needed.
  • Keep an eye on friends and how they react to drink or drugs they have taken and look out for signs of seizures. If they collapse and stop responding, have trouble breathing or turn blue: MEDICS ARE THERE TO HELP.

8. Sex Education

  • Alcohol and drugs can lower inhibitions, affect judgement and increase sexual desire – carry and use condoms.
  • Consent: If you change your mind on sex, say no and respect others' decisions. Consent works both ways.
  • Mixing drugs to enhance erection can increase risk of heart and blood pressure.
9. Get Home Safe
  • Don't drive under the influence of drink or drugs.
  • Pre-plan transport.
  • Arrange a meeting point if you get separated from friends.
  • Keep in well-lit areas.
  • Reach out to SOS if needed.
10. Come Downs
  • Keep hydrated and replace fluids and electrolytes, eat healthy foods, rest and avoid taking more substances to fix a come down.
  • Mental health impacts: Some drugs like MDMA may make you feel anxious or withdrawn after use and some drugs contain synthetic cathinones which can cause paranoia, anxiety and insomnia.
  • Consider STI testing if protection was not used.
  • If you feel physically or mentally unwell, reach out to professionals like your GP, A&E etc.
  • Check in with your friends after and reach out for support if needed.
  • A come down may last a few days.
