Could you join us as a Skills Tutor Support volunteer?

Our volunteer tutors provide academic support to range of people considered to be the furthest removed from the labour market and who may come from a disadvantaged background such as those who are homeless, ex-offenders, refugees, individuals with mental health issues and individuals with learning difficulties. 

ROLE:                        Skills Tutor Support Volunteer


LOCATION:               2 Trench Road, Mallusk


REPORTING TO:      Skills Tutor


HOURS:                     A minimum of 2 days a week.





To assist the Skills Tutor by engaging, supporting and mentoring service users to achieve their lesson plan goals.

  • To support the Skills Tutor within Externworks by coaching service users to develop key skills as part of their learning journey.
  • Promote the development of individual skills and independence.
  • Provide encouragement, guidance and support for the service user to achieve personal goals.
  • Supporting individuals with a view to reducing their social isolation, and promoting positive health and mental well-being.
  • To create opportunities socially which promote service user engagement within Externworks / in their community.
  • Offer practical support as requested by the Skills Tutor / Externworks project.



In all of the above roles volunteers will be required to:


  • Respect the right to privacy for all Extern service users, staff and volunteers, maintain their confidentiality and not disclose any personal information to anyone other than those authorized personnel within the charity.
  • To undertake all training identified by the Volunteer Skills Tutor / Project Manager.
  • Act responsibly to ensure that the safety and welfare of service users is paramount.
  • As an Extern volunteer, you have a duty to take reasonable care for your personal health& safety and that of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions.



L1 Qualification in the skills being delivered:

  • Volunteers should present as good communicators, and show qualities of being caring, non-judgmental and respectful
  • Volunteers should try to be reliable in their role


Health and Well-Being

  • “Expert by experience” is an advantage
  • Awareness of the personal impacts for individuals living with, or in recovery from conditions such as addictions, mental health needs, housing needs, lifestyle choices. Emphasis is on positive support strategies.


Life Skills

  • Experience of supporting / co-facilitating Life skills is an advantage
  • “Expert by experience” is an advantage
  • Willingness to undertake training.


All EXTERN volunteer roles are subject to an Enhanced AccessNI/Garda check. Copies of the relevant policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders are available on request. Please note that having a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining a volunteer role with EXTERN.
