Mentoring Support for Children Looked After is a community-based programme supporting young people aged between 10-17 who are ‘looked after’ to develop skills, improve relationships and maximise potential.

The service offers a bespoke and task-focused model of mentoring for young people who are residing in a care placement.

Extern's staff engage with young people in a one-to-one relationship, with regular and consistent contact across a six-month period. This creates positive relationships to assist, guide and support young people who are currently in a care placement (residential, kinship, fostering)

The aim of the project is help build capacity and resilience for the young person, as well as provide both emotional and practical support, and develop life and social skills.

The team supports around 130 young people across the year, with a range of services which includes activity days and events such as go-karting. The team also employs peer mentors, all of whom have first-hand lived experience of the care system in Northern Ireland.
