Extern has joined with Women’s Aid ABCLN to sign the White Ribbon Charter making the pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.

Staff from the leading social justice charity, which operates across the island of Ireland, have joined thousands of others in adding their signatures to the campaign this week.

Every year, the charity supports over 25,000 children and families facing challenges, as well as people who are homeless or facing homelessness, those dealing with mental health issues and the impact of suicide, people experiencing problem drug and alcohol use and people living with problem gambling. The organisation also supports refugees, the Traveller community and people living with an offending past, to change their lives.

Danny McQuillan, Interim CEO of Extern, said: “Our frontline staff work with people who are among  some of the most vulnerable and isolated in our communities and, sadly, we often see the catastrophic long-term impact that violence and domestic abuse can have on families and individuals.

“We are proud to support the White Ribbon campaign, and would urge others to follow us in supporting the important message that male violence against women is never, ever acceptable.”

Mr McQuillan added: “As an organisation, Extern is committed to tackling this issue and, in recognition of this, we recently received the Silver Award in the Workplace Charter on Domestic Violence. The award means that Extern is now recognised as a Safe Employer for any staff who may be experiencing domestic abuse. Extern will provide a safe place for staff to work, for example by protecting them from unwanted calls, and signpost those who need support to agencies which can assist.”

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement to end male violence against women. It was formed in 1991 by a group of men in Canada responding to the massacre of 14 female students to send out the message that male violence against women is unacceptable.   

Women’s Aid ABCLN White Ribbon Co-ordinator Tahnee McCorry said: “With one in four women affected by domestic abuse in their lifetime, staying silent is not an option. We aim to create a society where all women can live in safety, free from violence and abuse.”

The signing takes place during 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence which runs from 25th November until 10th December, and Tahnee says “We welcome Extern’s commitment to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that lead to end domestic abuse in all its forms.”

“Together we want to get the message out there for anyone affected by domestic abuse that you are not alone. Women’s Aid is here for you and help is available.”
