Axis

Axis is an adult service for prisoners, offenders and the socially excluded that aims to improve the access to individuals of training and employment opportunities and work experience. It is a project based programme that centres on the recycling of brown goods like furniture and other waste streams. Individuals can gain experience of french polishing, upholstery, catering and waste management and have the opportunity to work towards industry recognised qualifications such as NVQ's , warehousing and forklift licences. Axis also provides support in identifying and developing essential skills and concentrates on fostering the soft skills such as attendance, time-keeping and attitude that are fundamental to the work place.

Objectives

  • To provide a training and employment focused project for prisoners, offenders and the socially excluded
  • To assess individuals training and employment needs
  • To assess and support essential skills needs
  • To provide supervised and supported work experience.
  • To encourage and develop soft work skills attendance, timekeeping, attitude and life skills
  • To provide the opportunity to work towards industry recognised qualifications
  • To develop interagency communication and work to secure a safe and supported service

Referral Criteria

  • Axis referrals are predominately from PBNI, Probation approved hostels and the Prison Service. The project also caters for the homeless and socially excluded.
  • All referrals are adults over the age of eighteen
  • All referrals are accessed on the basis of need and risk

  • Supported and supervised project based work experience
  • On-going monitoring and review

  • Access and referral to other supportive agencies


Extern: Axis Maghaberry Prison

Axis has developed a training and work experience programme in partnership with the Northern Ireland Prison Service and the European Social Fund to provide a range of training outcomes and direct work experience in Mourne House at HMP Maghaberry.

The programme will work with individuals pre-release as part of the resettlement plans to provide training as part of transitional arrangements for offenders completing custodial sentences prior to release back into the community.
